Montclair CA started out its official existence as Monte Vista, but after the US Postal Service refused to open branch in town, the citizens voted to switch to their new name of Montclair CA in 1951. This saved the Postal Service from the bureaucratic nightmare of operating two post offices named Monte Vista (one up north and one in present day Montclair) and gave Montclair CA its own identity. Interestingly, both names make reference to the lovely views present in and around the city.
